Guy Who?

I love Bonfire Night.
It will forever remind me of my arrival in the UK back in 1996.

You have to remember, growing up outside of the UK, I had never heard of Guy Fawkes or Bonfire Night.   So imagine this…



I move to England at the end of October 1996.  An Aunt and some Cousins I have never met before take me to their house in a tiny village in Sussex.  Within a few days I get bundled into a car one dark evening and driven out to a field in the middle of nowhere at the end of some country lane.  And what I discover is all the locals gathered in a circle around a big fire on which a man is being burned in effigy!!!  WTF?!  I thought “Oh man, I’m about to be sacrificed!  They’ve brought the new stranger in town out to a field to be shoved inside some Wicker Man in an ancient druidic festival!”  The next thing I know there are fireworks exploding overhead and Catherine Wheels spinning and I was like “get to the Choppppaaaaa!!!!”

And that was my introduction to life in the UK. lol

Now, I’m a big big fan!  And there's a whopping great tonne of events this weekend to enjoy!
